Tagine

Reviews

I really enjoyed this restaurant. The service was great and you can feel the lively atmosphere when you walked in. I was here for the Jazz performance by Anna Elizabeth Kendrick and lucky enough to have a belly dancing after. The food are great and it worth every penny!

We happened upon Tagine while searching for an authentic Moroccan restaurant. It was one of the best discoveries we have made in NYC. It is super cute and comfortable inside. It is everything you could want from a Moroccan dining experience.

I read some of these other reviews and I was quite confused. First, this restaurant is Moroccan, which is in North Africa, not the Middle East. Why would you expect hummus and pita? Wrong continent. I have also never had poor service. We have been there when it was empty and been there when it was packed. We have always received excellent service whether it was from the waitstaff or the owners, Hamid and Marisa. They are super friendly people and are interesting to talk to. I have seen people be exceptionally rude to Marisa and she always handles it with politeness and grace. I have never seen Hamid when he wasn't smiling and trying to take care of his customers.

The food is fresh, beyond delicious and does take more time than a frozen entree being deep fried. You have to expect a little wait time. I have never found it unreasonable, and it is always worth it. It is a feast for the senses; beautiful, amazingly aromatic and the best Moroccan food I have ever had. Everything there is the best of it's kind. The traditional semolina bread they serve is so good. The last time we went, we brought a friend that doesn't eat gluten and even she couldn't resist the bread and dipping sauces. Those sauces are enough reason to go to Tagine. You want to put them on everything.

We have tried most of the cold apps and love them. The lamb borek is the best I've ever had. The spring lamb tagine is my favorite entree and the bastilla is my husband's. Generally we like to go with a group so we can order several things and share. It is so hard to decide.

The Moroccan sangria is spicy and warm and perfect. It isn't the typical kool aid that is so common. If you don't want the spice, order wine. If there was any way to replicate it at home, I would. Try as I might, I can't do it. Probably a good thing :).

After my first trip there, I couldn't wait to go back. I have brought family and friends there on many occasions. It is my number one place to eat and bring visitors when we come to the city. Always impressive

Tagine is by far the best Moroccan food I have ever had. Chef Hamid is amazing. He is warm and friendly and his food is the best. We have been multiple times and have always left happy.

The tagines are flavorful and well executed. My favorite appetizer is the lamb borek. I would come just for the semolina bread, lamb borek and sangria. The sangria is a beautiful drink with depth and spice.

This restaurant is truly a hidden gem. Between the good service and amazing food, it doesn't get any better. I like going with a group so we can order more things and share!

I love Tagine. It's a hidden gem in the city.
Chef Hamid makes the best semolina bread, charmoula and harissa that usually come with your meal, all made in-house. The tagines are the softest most flavorful tagines I've tried.
Great place to have dinner with friends, or even for a date night - split a carafe of house-made sangria - with an occasional live music and dance performance.

This place is awesome ! The owners and stuff are incredibly friendly. Me and girlfriend were wonderfully taken care of. I don't know about smb else's experience, but food was delicious and it wasn't a long wait at all. We were suggested what's popular on the menu and we could choose spicy or not. Spices actually come on the side so you can add it to the food as you wish.

We actually came there just to try something new and didn't really plan to stay long, but they started playing music, live singing, dancing and it was really fun ! Despite us being tired after work, we couldn't resist and stayed till way after midnight cause we enjoyed it so much !
Their interior is pretty as well.
I think it's a great place if you really wish to try authentic Moroccan cuisine and enjoy experience

Came here with my girlfriend for our second anniversary, and it was our first time having Moroccan food.

We had the Bastilla (pheasant pie) and lamb tagine as our entrees and enjoyed both immensely. The Bastilla was flaky, sweet, and fragrant, and the tagine reminded me of unique take on stew, with the lamb cooked tender enough to cut with only my fork. We also had Maaquda as an appetizer and a nice sampling of various desserts (free with yelp offer) which were both very tasty. Finished our meal feeling very satisfied, and my wallet didn't take a large hit in the process.

Staff was amicable and very helpful in suggesting options, and the environment had a nice vibe. Low lighting set a good mood but I did have to read some of the options off to my girlfriend since she had trouble reading the menu (not really a complaint though). Would like to come back with a group to enjoy dinner and a hookah, since the hookah would be more affordable with a few more friends in tow (girlfriend is not keen on smoking and couldn't justify going solo). Hookah aroma from nearby tables added nicely to the ambiance. We also caught a brief portion of a belly dancing performance but had to leave soon after it got started to make a show elsewhere.

Would definitely try again in future forays into the city.

"I had never tried Moroccan food before I came here, and WOW, I am glad I did!! It is DELICIOUS! The vegetable maquda are AMAZING! One of the best things about the menu is the items are labeled as vegetarian and gluten-free. As a vegetarian, I really appreciate that! The sangria is homemade and delightful!

The atmosphere is also wonderful! The lights are fairly dim, and you can sit on plush pillows (or chairs) while you dine!

The Monday night Karaoke is quickly become my favorite reason to go to Tagine's! It's free and you can sing any song they can find on YouTube! That's amazing!

I highly recommend Tagine's!"

"Great food...2nd time here. I've enjoyed two different lamb tagines - one sweet other savory...enjoyed both but think the sweet one was still very tasty; dates complimented the lamb aftertaste very well.

The service is superb; complimentary dessert and extra semolina bread my first visit meant a 2nd visit, ;)

Everything seemed clean to me...bathrooms superb . Try the Moroccan cigars for a very nice , traditional dessert that made me feel like I was in Moroco!"

"Love this place! The seating is comfy, you can smoke a Hookah with dinner, and the food was incredible. We ordered the Shekshouka and Vegetable Borek since we weren't super hungry, and it was plenty for two ladies to munch on. The Shekshouka was something I have never had, but I can't wait to go back and have it again, it was a really great dish! Loved the sangria and the tea as well. On Monday nights they do free karaoke, which was super entertaining. The host Amanda is a bundle of pure energy! You can choose any song in the world, as they pull from an online catalog. Gonna go back some Monday and see if they can get me drunk enough to sing."

"This review is for off-site catering.

I've used Tagine twice to cater lunch for a work event and both times were delicious and excellent! They had no problem fulfilling an order for approx. 75 people with just a day's notice. The owners Marisa and Hamid (also the chef) are extremely easy to work with reassuring me (the worrier) that everything would go smoothly and it did! Delivery was on-time with Hamid (such a nice man) delivering it himself.

I ordered the following and it was all scrapped clean:
- chicken tagine (plenty of big pieces to go around)
- vegetable casablanca tagine (my favorite - sweet with raisins & almonds)
- bastilla (also excellent)
- khobiza -spinach/kale appetizer
- spicy carrot salad (it sounds simple but the flavors are amazing, another favorite)
- zalouk - roasted eggplant appetizer
- chickpea & roasted beet salad
- they threw in a free homemade baklava too!

All day everyone kept saying how delicious the food was. I've been to Morocco too and this is as good as it gets.

I definitely recommend having Tagine cater for an event because it's so much more interesting and delicious than your typical sandwiches or pizza."

"The food here is absolutely delicious. From the couscous dishes to the cold apps. The only thing that has been inconsistent is the service. Ate here tonight and everything was fantastic. The mint tea is a definite must have, as well as the cold eggplant tapenade. It's always dimly lit, and they also provide hookah and couches to sit comfortably. Great dinner spot!"

"Tangine hosted my b-day party and I must say it was a blast from the minute we walked in to the minute we left. The staff was friendly and courtesy. The intimate setting made it perfect for my table of 10. We could hold conversation without yelling. The food was delicious and plentiful. The owner was a sheer delight. She was friendly and happy and made sure to interact with the guests - which I truly enjoyed. The entertainment was the highlight of the evening. When I made my reservations I jokingly requested a male belly dancer for my b-day and guess what.......I got a male belly dancer for my b-day. He interacted perfectly with my guests and made me feel like a queen for the evening. All-in-all I would highly recommend this restaurant for a night out or just a bite to eat. My guests were happy and I was happy. We will def return."

"We stumbled across Targine some years ago at their previous location. It was one of the best finds ever. The hostess was friendly and gave great service and the food was fabulous. I was very saddened when it relocated as I had no idea what had happened. We went back for our first meal in NYC for a while recently and found the place buzzing with life. The food equally as good if not better than before and the service fantastic. The Bastilla and the Lamb Targine are definitely my favorites. As a frequent traveler I get to sample foods from all over the world on a regular basis. If you want genuine Moroccan food served in a genuine atmosphere I would recommend Targine over any other Moroccan restaurant I have tried in New York. Fabulous food every time. I'll be back in two weeks for a dinner with clients I took to the previous location,at their request."

"We went to eat late lunch on oct 1st. First I thought this restaurant was closed because there was a huge construction on the road in front of the restaurant. But luckily it was opened. We were the only customers at first. The atmosphere and music was exotic and i thought it is good for a date. The waitress was so nice and she kindly explained the difference on the menu. We ordered cous cous dish and a ram tagine. The waiter was so friendly and cares customer well. They are not like servers that was described badly in the yelp. The foods were more gorgeous than I expected and very tasty. I tried cous cous previously but it was nothing like here. Today's cous cous was seasoned well and flavorful. Concerning tagine, It was the first experience but was beyond description. Ram was soft and soup was very delicious. I don't understand some bad comments in the yelp. Price was reasonable and food is excellent. I strongly recommend this restaurant to couple. Unfortunately I couldn't see belly dancing because we went in lunch hour. we definitely come back here again!"
